DOT, 7 Schools Tie Up for

Seven have agreed to join the Department of Tourism Region XI's "Tourism Gateway Program", which taps students to man information desks in key areas of the city.

"We want to involve the students of schools with tourism related courses in receiving guests to better equip the students in understanding the tourism industry," said Arturo Boncato Jr., Regional Director of DOT 11.

Participating schools include Joji Ilagan Career Center Foundation (JICCF), Philippine Women's College (PWC), Mats College of Technology, Davao Merchant Marine Academy College of Southern Philippines (DMMA), Davao Doctors College (DDC), University of Mindanao (UM), Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) and AMA Computer College.

The Tourism Gateway Program is a practicum/internship or On the Job Training Program of DOT 11 that aims to integrate Tourism awareness, customer relations, basic tour guiding, regional tourism exposure.

Boncato, during yeasterday's Club 888 forum at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao said, the program last year with Joji Ilagan Career Center Foundation as its first partner.

"We have expanded the program to AdDU and as far as Marawi State University.  We want to go beyond program promotion, we would like the students to talk to clients and do research as well," Boncato added.

Positive feedbacks from students prompted DOT 11 to expand the program to different schools in the region.

"The students are very appreciative of what they have experienced during their stint with DOT and we are happy to again be a part of this program,"  said Sonny Rebucas, student development president of Joji Ilagan Career Center Foundation.  By Carmelle Marie Harrow
